History of the design of Garden City
Those of you interested in the origins of Garden City might want to take a look at this 1998 article by NY Times columnist: MARCELLE S. FISCHLER

http://www.nytimes.com/1998/11/15/nyregion/an-immigrant-s-vision-created-garden-city.html

The article talks about AT Stewart's (as in Stewart Avenue) design for the area around the period of 1870.  It also talks about the work done by his wife: Cornelia Clinch Stewart  and their family.

One tidbit I learned is:  Streets all over the village are named after Stewart's heirs, including Merillon, Clinch, Butler, Weatherall and Lefferts.
