Spouse’s name: Denise

Children: None

Occupation: New York State Bank Examiner

Education: BBA Pace University, MBA Adelphi University

Since graduating from Garden City High School in 1964:

After an initial misstep in engineering, I received business degrees from two local colleges. My first job was with a “Big 8” accounting firm and after three years I joined a bank. Banking became a problem industry and after surviving several reorganizations, I became a victim of its problems as well. I came to the New York State Banking Department in 1991 as a bank examiner. I currently examine foreign branches and agencies which are all located in Manhattan. I enjoy the work and have adjusted to commuting (sleeping) on the Long Island Railroad.

I have lived on Long Island my entire adult life. After Garden City, we moved to Port Washington and I currently live in West Babylon. In 2000, I got married to my wonderful wife Denise. She has introduced me to boating, gardening and the joys of life. We take a winter vacation in Rincon, Puerto
Rico
, where we hope to spend some time when I retire. It is one of the few places that never gets close to freezing during the winter.

Most salient high school memory:  Senior year was the most socially active time in my life.

Education: Wells College, BA
Hobbies/pastimes: Hiking, photography, painting, driftwood sculpture

Since graduating from Garden City High School in 1964:
Like so many of us back in the day, I got married right out of college. I spent the four years living in Manhattan, working as publicist for Doubleday, first in good old Garden City (reverse commuting!), then in their Park Avenue office, where I hobnobbed with such celebs as Tiny Tim. When my husband was offered a job in Florida in ’71, we moved to Coconut Grove and learned to live “la vida loca.” I bicycled to my job as Advertising Manager for the U. of Miami Press in Coral Gables, working on campus amid those underwater basket-weavers you’ve heard so much about. My daughter, Jennifer, was two years old when my husband was transferred to his bank’s London office in ‘78. We moved to a beautiful house on a crescent in South Kensington, and Jennifer ended up at Young England Kindergarten when the future Princess was plain old Miss Diana in a purple smock. When Diana’s engagement to Prince Charles was announced, the press showed up at the
school in droves, much to the bafflement of the children. My second daughter, Cassandra, was born there, in the same hospital as Cilla Black (remember her?). We returned to Florida in ’81 and divorced two years later.

In ’85, I remarried Bill Betus, math teacher and inveterate traveler, and moved to back to his “bachelor pad” in Smithtown, LI, where my third daughter, Allison, was born in ’87. During this time, I returned once again to the Doubleday fold, commuting to G.C., lunching at Leo’s and writing for the Book of the Month Club, Mystery Guild, Military, One Spirit and other clubs until I was laid off a few years ago and decided to “retire.” Along the way, Bill and I accumulated small homes in Silverton, CO, where we spend every summer hiking in the San Juans, and St. Augustine, FL, which is warm in the winter. In fact, Athene, Flo, Ellen and I had a fabulous mini-reunion there recently. (But Bill and I are still living in the bachelor pad!)  I also volunteer at an animal shelter. Please adopt a homeless pet!

Parting Thought
: Old friends are the best friends, ‘cause they’ve seen you in a gym suit. Hang on to your sense of humor!

Since graduating from Garden City High School in 1964:

Married, family, had fun in my non-profit world career in Washington, DC and then Philadelphia. I was the first “staff” person for the National Constitution Center, here in Philadelphia. I ran the Pew Foundation feasibility study for the Center. For the past 18 years, I have been involved in fundraising here at PCOM, before that Jefferson Medical College, and before that the Wilma Theater. It’s been fun, though these days …. Not so much!  Fundraising has suited me; I enjoy people and I’m optimistic -- two prerequisites for the job.

Husband Steve, an economist, works for IBM here; in Washington he was with Congressional Budget Office and before that the Federal Reserve Board of Governors. He ran into Geoff Woglom at CBO. Hope we see him at Reunion!

Son Devin is MBA, currently working in Pasadena for Disney Corporation on their Corporate Sustainability team. His wife Robyn Hansen, RN, works at Huntington Hospital in the ER. We are all awaiting the birth of our first grand-daughter, who is due anytime now!

Most salient high school memory: Masquers, of course! Got me through High School. Athene Landis as a nun…Bobby Max as a rocket.

Most interesting/funny fact about my life thus far: too many to choose one! ;-)

Occupation: house wife

Education:  Bradford College

Since graduating from Garden City High School in 1964:

Since graduating, I worked in personnel for Chemical Bank (there is a name from the past) and as an assistant in a dental office.   Once Tom and I became parents, I became immersed in volunteer work in the Summit community. We live in a two hundred year old house which obviously has taken a little of our time to maintain.  I was very fortunate to be able to be at home with our children. Tom has been retired for several years and we are enjoying that life.   We have a home in Lake Placid and spend as much time as possible up there year round.   There are now four generations living under one roof in the summer there,  so life is busy and interesting!  My father at 93 still plays golf and our one year old grandson is beginning to walk….not sure who will fall in the lake first – probably one of us in the middle!   Tom and I enjoy golf and play as often as we can – “have sticks –will travel”

Parting thought: Tom and I feel very blessed to have shared such a happy and productive life with our children…We wish the same for our grandchildren and yours.

Spouse’s name:  Don

Children:  Don Jr. (38), Bob (37), Christine (33)

Since graduating from Garden City High School in 1964:

I graduated from Marymount College, in Tarrytown, NY and worked at Citibank (then called First National City Bank) assigning salary grades to jobs in “position evaluation.”  I married Don, in 1969, whom I met while in college and we had three children, Don Jr., Bob and Crissy.    My life as a young mom was spent taking care of the kids, being a PTA mom and doing all that went with it, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Once our youngest was in middle school, I started selling newspaper advertising part time, amidst volunteer work, still on the side.  Until then, I had no idea how much I enjoyed selling!

Although I am now retired from the newspaper business, I still sell advertising as the Editor of my annual town Directory here in Upper Saddle River, NJ.   In addition to that, I am enjoying my soon-to-be seven grandchildren (the seventh is due April 27), most of whom live close by in Wyckoff, NJ where our two sons live with their families.  Our daughter, now an assistant school principal, married with two children, stayed in Boston after graduating from Boston College, having received both her BA and Masters there. Our son Bob graduated from Boston College as well, and went directly to Wall Street (amidst all this turmoil, fortunately, he’s still there!) and our older son, Don Jr. graduated from Lafayette College in Easton, PA and then went on to the Writer’s Workshop at the University of Iowa where he studied and received his Masters of Fine Arts in Creative Writing.  He is now a college professor and writer.

My husband, Don, who is in the textile business, and I spend our spare time out at our summer place in Southold, Long Island, on the North Fork. The family gathers there and besides fishing, we get a lot of boating in.   If any of you are ever out there, we are in Southold Shores, and would love to see you!  We have a breathtaking view of Shelter Island.

Other spare moments are spent writing and fulfilling a lifelong dream of working in a bookstore, so if you are ever in Paramus, NJ on Route 17 South, stop in at Barnes and Noble.  Look for the person with the widest smile…..I have been there part time for two years now and I just love it!!

Memories of high school will always be filled with Mr. Orban’s homeroom, Mr. Richmond’s Biology class, football and basketball games, hall monitors, the Hamburger Express, Weejun loafers, gym uniforms, lockers and lunch!   I remember, too, sitting in Madam Leu’s French class, while Ginny Martin ran down the hall screaming that President Kennedy had been shot!

I think of my high school days frequently.   I am lucky enough to have a dad who still lives in Garden City so I am there often.   At the age of 95, he is sharper than many of us would ever claim to be, still golfing, dancing, gardening, fishing, reading and participating in church and retired men’s club activities. He loves watching my younger brother, Greg, report from overseas on Cable Fox News and Dad continues to win many awards for outstanding service to his church inspiring those around him.  If you ever get a copy of the Garden City News, look for my dad…he is in it frequently!!!!!

Education: BA, MBA, PsyD

Hobbies/pastimes: Reading, Free speeches for nonprofit organizations.

Since graduating from Garden City High School in 1964:

I went into the Air Force and married at 19. Got out, went to college on the GI Bill.  Took a job as an insurance adjuster to get thru my MBA. Then went to work at Gallo Wine as a merchandiser in supermarkets in Southern California. Got promoted 10 times in seven year and found myself working directly for Earnest Gallo. That lasted a year till I had an argument with Joe Gallo. Earnest made him apologize to me in public. Joe made it clear that he would make me suffer for it. Left quickly. Strange Italian people.

Went to work for Amaretto Di Sorono as national sales manager. The onto Amaden wine as V.P

till they sold. Then Fetzer wines as VP till they sold., then to Jose Quervo as V.P. till they sold to the English. Got tired of being sold.

Opened my own business twelve years ago with my wife in communication training. (Tremblay & McLoughlin Seminar and Coaching.) Started on my PsyD at The Chicago School for Professional Psychology LA campus four years ago. (Only thesis left to go.)

Business has been good and I enjoy public speaking. Largest audience to date 800 and growing.

Coaching has become a bigger and bigger part of our business. (Some heavy clients)

Just starting motivational speaking and loving it after I got over the initial fright.

Interesting: My grandson is sleeping in the same room in which I grew up in garden City.

Children:  Anne (age 36), Sarah (age 32)

Occupation:  retired RN, CPA

Education:  Skidmore College BS in Nursing 1968, Central Washington University BS Accounting 1982

Since graduating from Garden City High School in 1964:   I got to know Manhattan well after spending some time there while at Skidmore for nursing and then working at New York Hospital and then Mass General in Boston in the early days of open heart nursing.  I got married in Garden City in 1969 and have unfortunately only been back to GC twice since then because my entire family is on the West Coast since the early seventies.   My husband and I moved to the Seattle area and have lived there ever since.  After having two children, I went back to school and got an accounting degree and worked in public accounting over the years which I really enjoyed.  I am currently only working in our own business ventures which can get time consuming!

My children both also live on the West Coast.  The oldest lives in a rural area in Washington State and grows a lot of her own food and has now started raising chickens (this was definitely not from my side of the family!).   She previously owned a green house business where I occasionally worked and learned about gardening and the wonderful smell of flowers.  My other daughter worked at Deloitte Consulting for a while and now is on a Broad Fellowship in the Portland Public Schools and loves it.

My husband, whom I met at Cornell Medical Center in NYC, is a neurologist who for the past twenty years has specialized in headache disorders.  We have traveled quite a bit and while he gives lectures and generally is working, I get to go swimming and generally play around.  He is not quite yet ready to retire as he enjoys his special research projects.

We sold our large family home last year and have recently moved into a high rise condo.  We are enjoying the view, no yard care and all the new gadgets.  We also have a condo on the Washington Coast where we love walking on the beach.

Most salient high school memory:  If I had to pick one memory, it was Mrs. McNally’s math class.  I really enjoyed the people in the class and wished that I had gotten to know some of them better.

Spouse’s name:  Carol (Ross)

Children:            Christopher (33) and Douglas (30)

Occupation:        Architect

Education:          BA Wesleyan University 1968; M Arch Clemson University 1976

Since graduating from Garden City High School in 1964:

By the summer of 1972, I had graduated from Wesleyan University and completed 3+ years active duty navy reserve service and had temporarily returned to GC. George Goldner invited me to spend that summer in a rental house that he, Mel Harner and others shared on weekends.  During one weekend in the Hamptons he introduced me to my wife Carol.  In December the following year, Carol and I married and moved to Greenville, SC.  Our sons Christopher and Douglas were both born there while I completed my professional degree at Clemson, did my internship in a small design practice, and got my architectural license.

Carol and I relocated to Stone Mountain GA in 1980 and I began a 19 year career with an architectural design firm in Atlanta.  While with that firm my career evolved from design architect/project architect, to project manager, and eventually to management of the practice.  The firm grew to more than 70 people and worked on many of the significant civic projects in Atlanta during the 80s and early 90s (the Atlanta Zoo, Underground Atlanta, Fulton County Government Center, the Atlanta Federal Center, the atrium and other major renovations at Atlanta-Hartsfield International Airport, several event locations and the “look of the games” for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics).  In 1985, we moved to Marietta, GA into our current home, and Carol’s sister Barbara came to live with us.  During my time with this firm, I was very fortunate to be involved with all of our sons’ activities as they were growing up including the many trips for school and recreational baseball, basketball, and soccer teams.

After leaving active duty in 1972, I had remained in the navy’s ready reserves initially for the added income, but over time, more for the satisfaction I derived from it.  My last mobilization assignment, as commanding officer preparing a unit in Atlanta to be the navy’s shipping agent at the port of Savannah, ended in 1990.  As it turned out, the unit was mobilized for the first gulf war shortly after I had completed my tour by loading the first two ships while on training duty orders.  While I had mixed feelings at the time, Carol was greatly relieved.  I finally retired from the reserves in 1993.

After 19 years with the same design firm, I have changed jobs three times since 1999.  I currently enjoy being the “grey hair” corporate risk and quality practice manager for the Atlanta office of a Nashville, TN based architecture/engineering firm.  The primary project I am watching over now is the design of the new International Terminal at the Atlanta Hartsfield/Jackson airport.  I have no immediate thoughts of retiring since construction of the new terminal won’t be completed until 2012 at the earliest.

Our son Chris attended college and graduate school in San Antonio TX, got married in Beaumont in 2007, and has since settled in Houston.  Carol and I were very happy that George Goldner made the trip to the wedding.  Last Thanksgiving Chris and his wife announced they are expecting.  Meanwhile, Doug finished college in Kennesaw, GA and lives and works in the metro Atlanta area.

Carol and I built a small house at a lake 1 hour north of Atlanta where we can get away (no TV, or land line phones) on weekends.  We get to see a lot of Doug, which is very good.  Carol works part time doing “virtual” office clerical/financial work for several small businesses.  Her sister Barbara reads constantly, has begun knitting once again, and is our primary “coordinator of communications”.  I play “ALTA” league tennis several times a month and golf very infrequently (mostly fundraising events and an annual 4 day golf reunion with Wesleyan classmates).  I still enjoy sketching and painting, as well as playing the piano for relaxation.  I don’t do as much of either as I’d like.  We are all eagerly awaiting the arrival of our first grandchild in July.

Most salient high school (or before) memory: “Can Jacques come out and play?” -  Athene, Sue, Flo, Moose, Nance at my parents’ front door.  Being included often as part of your extraordinary group of friends (with Andy, Jim, Skip, Katie, Bobbie, Brett, John, Sally and others) during junior high and the early years of high school is a very fond memory for me.
