Spouse’s name: Bernice (Locasto)
Children: Robert (37), Kara (35), Stephen (30)
Grandchildren: Savannah (5), James Gabriel (18 months)
Occupation: Financial Planner
Education: Belmont Abbey College (BA)
Hobbies: Travel, golf, reading, time at the cabin on the Blue Ridge Pkwy., time with the grandchildren

Since graduating from Garden City High School in 1964:
Following college, and after Bernice finished her internship at New York Hospital (Cornell Medical Center), we married on September 20, 1969. Bernice is a Registered Dietitian and works with renal failure patients in two kidney dialysis centers.

We have spent our married life in Charlotte, raising three children, all of whom are happy, productive adults. All of the children were excellent athletes. Kara and Robert were Junior Olympic Swimmers as young adults. Later, Kara played basketball in high school. Robert was All-Conference in football and wrestling. Stephen was inducted into Charlotte Catholic High School’s Athletic Hall of Fame, being first team All-Conference in three sports (football, wrestling and baseball.) Stephen has authored three children’s books. Robert submitted a script to the Austin Film Festival (one of 4,000 submissions) and was a Finalist as one of the three writers selected and recognized at the Festival by Oliver Stone for his work. Yes, we really are proud parents!

I have been in Financial Planning for over thirty years. At times it has certainly been a challenge; however I enjoy my work and the opportunity to be of service to others. While at Belmont Abbey I was President of IFC, Captain of the baseball team, and now serve as a member of the Board of Trustees for the college.

Some of you will remember my brother, Jerry. He is Principal of Charlotte Catholic High School and has made great contributions and sacrifices on behalf of thousands of children over the past thirty years. I believe he is the most important addition to Catholic education sine the Diocese of Charlotte was formed many years ago.

Parting Thought
Like many of you, I have great high school memories. I arrived on the scene in eighth grade and was openly accepted. Kathy McGroarty (Mabry) and Terry Kirby pulled me from the front of the school bus and suddenly I was no longer alone!

Since graduating from Garden City High School in 1964:

In 1965, my family moved to California.  I stayed back East and finished my Bachelors and Masters in four years and started my career as an Operations Research Specialist with the Bell System (remember them?)  I moved into IT consulting and then into Project management.  By the end of 1970 my wife and I had three great kids and by 1975 we had moved 9 times passing through Massachusetts, New Hampshire, back to Massachusetts, Michigan and finally to Texas where I’ve been ever since.  I had an extremely interesting career that started by working on the development of a mathematical model of manufacturing systems, developing one of the first MRP systems, the first on-line Marketing Research system (yeah, those annoying people who call you to do surveys), consulting in Europe.  I even served as IT Director for the Dallas Opera where they paid me extra if I promised not to sing!  I also founded my own company, Aladdin Computer Systems which built computer systems (competed closely with Dell (yeah, right)), performed network integration and other consulting services.

My first marriage broke up in 1983 and shortly after, I met Jan, the most wonderful person I’ve ever known.  We have been blissfully retired in a resort community about 90 miles south of Dallas since 2000.  We play a lot of golf, travel in our RV (which I’ll have at the reunion), play bridge and are active in our local Church.

All three of my kids have moved to the West coast.  One in San Francisco, one in San Jose and the third, across the bay from Seattle.  I’ve been blessed with four grandchildren, 13, 9, 7, and 1 month.

Parting thought: Let’s all try to stay in touch more.  I’m in Texas and my door is always open to guests.

Most salient high school memory:  I really enjoyed my years at GCHS and think of all my old friends often.  I wish I’d remained in closer touch with more of them.  Sooo many memories, it’s hard to know where to start.  Wrestling matches, lacrosse games, “elephanting” down the streets of GC in the rain, Summer weekends and a few weeks on Fire Island, trips to the beach, and fun in all my classes.  That’s just a start.

Most interesting/funny fact about my life thus far:  After retiring, I was recruited as Director of Networks and Telecommunications at a Texas College.  That lasted just a month.  Retirement is better and I’m glad I got my priorities straight.

Spouse name:  Sue Stark (GCHS ’63)
Children: Ian (36), Emily (34) and Andy (31)
Occupation: I teach economics at Amherst College
Education: Yale (BA, PhD)

Since graduating from Garden City High School in 1964:
I married Sue after she graduated from college in 1967. My first job was at Boston College from 1972-1978. Since 1978 I have taught at Amherst. I enjoy teaching and at the moment have no thoughts of retirement. In addition to being blessed with challenging students, my academic career has provided me with some wonderful experiences while on leave; 1) A year at the Fed in 1976-1977, where I met Flo Driscoll and her husband Steve Zeller; 2) A wonderful year with my young family in London (1984-85); 3) Followed by a year with my younger son Andy in Cambridge, England (1991-92, Sue was home helping Emily through the college application process); 4) Since 1999 I have made 4 trips to Cape Town South Africa. The most recent last July and August to lecture at the University of Stellenbosch (in the winelands 25 miles from Cape Town).

Sue and I have had a great life raising a family in Amherst. While we are both still active with our careers (Sue runs an adoption program for abused and neglected children), we are anxiously awaiting grand kids.

I would very much like to be with you all at the reunion, but that may not be possible. While I have enjoyed pretty good health, I am scheduled for a knee replacement on May 21. We’ll see how the recovery goes. If I don’t get there, have a great time.

GCHS Memory: Sitting dazed in an English class after the flamboyant teacher (who’s name I can’t remember) had announced that Kennedy had been shot and then left the class room in tears.

Since graduating from Garden City High School in 1964:

Like us all, I’ve laughed, cried, loved, learned, grown, changed and hopefully more of the same to come  (‘cept the cry part!). After college I couldn’t get to Manhattan fast enough to make my dream of living there come true. For 20 years I lived on East 63rd Street and worked for American Express, where I had a great career in sales & marketing. One day I took a business trip to England for Amex to make a speech at a conference. Viola! I met my husband Daniel. He’s an honest to goodness Parisian and we proved that long distance relationships can work out. We married 2 years later - I said farewell to Manhattan and American Express and hello Paris, France. After 6 years there we moved to England just south of London. My best friends are still over there. I miss them terribly. That’s the hard part of moving a lot – what you leave behind.

We moved back to the USA in ’01 after my husband left American Express. His family all live somewhere between the French Rivera and the Alps. Family visits are very nice indeed.

I’ve had so many different careers even I can’t keep up. All of them seemed to be a natural evolution. I learn so much each time. While I lived in France and England I pretty much stayed with business and did a lot of consulting. One day I heard a speaker in London. She was visiting from NJ of all places – the life coach Laura Berman Fortgang. She so inspired me, a year later I qualified and became a Life/Executive coach myself. It’s a portable profession and I easily continued it when I moved back to the US. One day our best friends from England were visiting us in Connecticut. They said their company needed someone in the US to help on their business development here. Zap! I couldn’t resist the call back to the business world. So now I run my own business, representing my friend’s company and another also based in London. I work with museums and large institutions. It’s heavenly. My customers include the likes of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, MoMA and Lincoln Center. I love it – and still dabble just a bit in coaching.

Now we live in Branford, CT a suburb of New Haven. We have lots to do with Yale as it’s really the center of New Haven life. We’re avid gardeners. I have a rose garden just like my Dad’s in GC…he’d be so proud! When not gardening, we can be found puttering around the house renovating and decorating to our hearts’ content or going to a Toastmaster’s meeting, the speaking Club. And we’ve just been invited to join a dining club where the members rotate from house to house each month and cook, dine and socialize. Another adventure about to begin!

If you’re on Facebook there’s a lot of us there…please ‘friend’ me…I’d love that! See you soon I hope. xoxo

  • Parting thought: I’m looking forward to seeing classmates again after some reservation and hesitation; like many I’m sure memories are bittersweet. I think of the reunion as a gift…a chance to reconnect and in some ways move forward. Intriguing.
  • Most salient high school memory: Singing, singing, singing and more singing. It was my salvation and I still hear the lovely voices of fellow singers like Alex Walls and Betty Van Cise as clearly as if we had a rehearsal yesterday. Oh lovely Concert Choir and Celestones! What bliss!
  • Most interesting/funny fact about my life thus far: Living and working in the UK and Europe and being married to a European opened up my world beyond belief. I’m so grateful for this. I’m lucky. I believe the best has happened and is yet to come. ???Huh??? ___________________________________

I attended college in San Antonio, Texas. Met my wife there and we were married in Dec, 68. I subsequently had civilian operations jobs in Texas, Georgia, Utah, Minnesota and Ohio. I am currently the VP, Operations for a small demountable interior wall company here in Texas.

  • Parting thought: I still believe “Team plus Spirit equals Victory” and that I had, thanks to Garden City High, a chance to know and learn from some incredible people, teachers and classmates.
  • Most salient high school memory: Making sure I spelled “Garden City” correctly at the Pep Rallys…If I didn’t I figured Healy and Quayle, or more likely Lucci and McGroaty would have kicked my butt.
  • Most interesting/funny fact about my life thus far: I got to live many of my dreams. Still got some items on my bucket list, but not as many as I had in 1964.
